Food Security in Uncertain Times
During the era of mass globalisation it was convenient to think of the world purely as a marketplace, where the only criteria that mattered was time, cost and quality.
In these more unstable and uncertain times we need to re learn the lessons of the last World War, when millions of people suffered on rations even for a decade after the war had ended. Food security must now become our first priority.
Unfortunately the current government’s plans are to remove food subsidies from farmers by 2028. They plan to replace these subsidies with new environmental subsidies for schemes like “Re-Wilding” or solar farms. These plans will leave tenant farmers high and dry. Indeed the government is offering these farmers lump sums to leave the industry, paving the way for multi-national corporations to take over farming, producing processed meat substitutes instead of organic, natural foods.
We are blessed on these islands with fertile land, consistent precipitation and oceanic climate, meaning there is absolutely nothing to stop us from becoming self sufficient in food production.
Our close neighbours in The Netherlands are the world’s second largest food exporter, despite having a much smaller land mass and smaller population than we have. Given the right support our farmers can embrace a technological revolution and become the best in the world, but it will require leadership from Reform UK. Labour & The Conservatives seem to have abandoned food security as a priority.
